“Give me the ball. I want that ball and will hold on to it because it was my only friend for so long”.

Chance’s journey: Chance was whisked away from an ex-husband’s patio where his only friend was a tennis ball.  His owner found that he didn’t have the tie to spend with Chance. He would let him come in at night and on weekends, but the rest of the time, he was spent on a 6 X 8 foot patio.

Mary Sanders and Marilyn Godfrey brought him into SSRI. Chance loved to drop his ball in the pool and have people retrieve it, which they happily did. He was such a gorgeous black and white show dog, who loved everyone. He was such a friendly and loving dog, even though he had been so neglected. After a few months, we found a perfect home for him. A loving couple adopted him and gave him a new lease on life after four years of being in such an enclosed and lonely space.

Story

“Life is a journey to be traveled through every good scent and on to the next!”

Sally’s journey: Sally was a loving and lively field Spaniels found wandering in the Pahrump desert. We will never know why she left her home. Perhaps a baby came into the family and the finances and time didn’t allow for this sweetie. She became a wanderer until she arrived at a ranch where a loving German Shepherd breeder took her in and then connected with SSRI to help her on the next leg of her journey.

When she arrived in Las Vegas, Sally was 9 years old with lot of energy. Her favorite things were smelling for little creatures when she wasn’t with her humans or other dogs.

After a small surgery, she went to a foster home of a single woman who loved her dearly and ultimately adopted her. It frequently happens that a foster family or person adopts the dog in their care. We call it “failing at fostering”. We happily lose many foster homes this way.

Sally did well being loved and walked a couple times a day around the park nearby. Her mom is a writer, who had lots of time to spend with her.

Their journey: Harry and Maggie came through ESRA in Scottsdale, AZ. They were twelve when they arrived from two years of neglect. Their loving mom had died two years before and her daughter came and fed them but left the in the scorching Arizona sun. It was one of those cases where she should have called ESRA earlier. Senior Spaniel Rescue agreed to take them in. Harry wasn’t hairy at all. He was almost bald until Dr. Arteaga prescribed thyroid medicine for him. They stayed with a family for several months, where we discovered that the two dogs were no longer friends. Perhaps it had been the two years of struggling together for food and water. We decided to separate them, and they both were adopted by loving families.

This is Maggie's story:

... as told by Catherine, Maggie's new owner (2009)

My life with Maggie began when a friend emailed me a flyer about the need for emergency foster care for a senior Springer Spaniel. My two had died within the past 15 months, and I was feeling ready to have another furry friend. I actually considered another breed and then I saw her picture and read her story. This little girl needed help and I could give it! I needed a dog and there she was!

I called the Senior Spaniel Rescue group and, because it was a housing emergency, I had Maggie in less than 24 hours. She is awesome and wonderful! She is obviously well bred and must have been loved by her first owner who died at age 50 when Maggie was just 10. Maggie is well-mannered, loving and still fun at the age of 13. She smiles and wags that wee tail freely, dances for joy when the leash comes out and sets a merry pace when we walk.

In two weeks time, I signed the adoption papers to make Maggie truly mine. She seems to know the difference and is even more full of energy and affection. She loves her yard and her new pink collar and leash. She and I are grateful to the rescue group and other foster care givers who kept her safe until I came along. God bless you all! And thank God for Maggie - my furry little angel.

.... about a year later....

I am writing to let you know that Maggie died last night. She would have been 14 years old this month. She had lost weight over the past six weeks, and after I brought her to the vet, we found out that she had liver cancer. Dr. Anast called me at 6:10 pm to tell me that she was declining rapidly and would not survive the night. We decided to prevent any further suffering and sent her gently into the night.

The past eight months with her have been wonderful. She is truly one of the smartest, sweetest, most beautiful beings I have ever known. My adult children were very concerned when I adopted her because of her age and the fact that I had so recently lost my other two Springers. I reassured them that I would be abundantly blessed if I had her even six months. Maggie was truly special. I discovered that she was profoundly deaf, perhaps even from birth, and that she could read a person's energy and intention. She was loving and affectionate and a blessing to all who met her. To those who might hesitate to adopt a senior dog let me say this: there is no greater gift than to provide love and safety to an animal left alone late in life. There is no greater gift received than that animal's trust and devotion for however long you are together. Thank you, Maggie, for coming to me and for loving me.

Thank you for entrusting this precious soul to my care. I am honored to have known her.

"Hey, you want to play? I’m up for a game of Tug of War or to carry my stuffed toy around the yard. I love people and dogs… one or two would be fine and if you throw in a kid then I’m living in dog Heaven. Hey, you want to play some more”?

Droopy’s journey: Droopy came to SSRI when his owner died. She had wanted him to be put to sleep upon her death, but her son recognized that there was a lot of life left in him and couldn’t go through with her request. He contacted Kathy Ferguson, who agreed with the son and helped Droopy on the start of his journey.

He stayed for a short time with Phoebe and Michael Flynn and then with Lynn and Adam Edikaukas. He was quickly adopted into a loving family and joined a younger Springer, who introduced him to the pool and big back yard. He is living the life he was meant to have.

“I need to have a forever home with other dogs. They say I am a very sweet “Velcro dog”. I will hand you a paw as my way of saying “hello”. I love to go for walks and just be at your side. I will even play patty cake with you!

Homer’s journey: Homer is so sweet and so smart. He is a reddish tinged Liver and White Bench Springer. One time, he was meeting a Basset hound and the Basset was a bit rambunctious and butting Homer with his head. Homer reached out and gently put his paw on the Basset’s head as if to say, “calm down… we are both on leashes so we can’t play right now”. The Basset calmed down immediately and relaxed with Homer. Homer is such a smart dog and seems to know so much.

He was adopted in early 2011 after having survived perianal cancer.

Spring 2011: The living situation changed as his new human went off to war, so Homer came back to SSRI.

Summer 2011: Homer went to a doggie training camp to work on his separation anxiety. Randy at Desert Sands Dog Training and Boarding helps dogs with issues to overcome. Homer even stayed after the training to lounge with his new pack so his new adoptive parents could go on a trip before they could take him.

Fall 2011: Homer was flown to Watsonville, CA by Steve, a wonderful pilot volunteer with Pilots N Paws to join his new family with three other Springers where he will never be alone again.

Captain Jack, Fall of 2010 intake

“They call me Jack. I was left at the Nevada SPCA hospital for someone to care for me. I am happy to be out of the cage and in my new foster home. These nice humans cleaned me up and I am healing well.

I am an affable guy, who has had a really tough time lately. My owners left me at the NVSPCA doctor’s office and just said goodbye. I really don’t understand why… I am so sweet and a perfect companion dog.

Jack’s journey: Lynn Schenker fell in love with him a she transported him to Phoebe and Michael Flynn’s house to be fostered. Even though he was deaf, he adapted to hand signals that Phoebe taught him.  Within a month, he was adopted by a wonderful couple in California who worked in dog rescue themselves. He fit in very nicely with their pack.

Story

We are Sheba and Princess. Yes, we are older dogs, but that doesn’t mean we are any less lively than when we were younger. Our wonderful human was swallowed up by the Big Recession and had to give us up. We were regularly groomed and seen at the vet, so our health is superb.

We are very loving Springer sisters, and we are bonded for life. We love walks, belly rubs and even enjoy cats.

Princess tells us: Sheba is going blind so I help her out some. If you saw her running round, you wouldn’t even know she is blind. Her sense of smell and hearing have compensated for her sight loss. Please don’t tell her she’s blind… she just thinks the world is a little more cloudy these days.

Sheba tells us: Princess is a bit shier than me but she loves a good belly rub or hug. I will say that she isn’t crazy about the rain… definitely a desert dog. She is my best buddy and loves to run and play.

Their journey: Sheba and Princess’ dad was a commercial real estate agent who got caught in the recession. Prior to that time, the girls were lavished with grooming and care. By the end of 2009, their loving groomer Cindy Robertson contacted us for help. Loving his girls, their owner released them into our care. Sheba, a “Velcro dog” was blind, but could hear well and followed her sister’s lead in their walks around the home.

They spent some time at Besty’s ranch until Lynn Edikaukas answered our Craig’s List ad and took the girls into her home with her son Adam. They stayed with Lynn until she had to move into a place that didn’t allow dogs.

In the nick of time, Lynn Schenker convinced a former relative, Margie, to take them in with her two Chihuahuas. Margie’s active male dog was quite enamored with Princess, but she didn’t see him as her Prince Charming and ignored him. The girls’ lives were about to change when they found a loving forever family and a new Collie playmate who had lost his buddy and was lonely.

Summer 2011 update: Recently, Princess had a kidney problem, which Dr. Raul Artegea solved with excellent medical care joined with lots of prayers and love from all who had known them. The last we heard, all five were living happily together.
